CHOOSING CARRIER OILS |
|
The carrier oils most
often used in aromatherapy are almond,
apricot kernel, canola, grapeseed, hazelnut,
jojoba, sunflower, and sesame oils. It adds
that in addition, avocado, borage, evening
primrose, rose hip seed, and wheat germ oils
are often added in small percentages to
enhance aromatherapy blends. Less commonly
used carrier oils include camellia, kukui,
maadamia, meadowfoam, olive, peanut, pecan,
pistachio, rice bran, soy, and walnut oils. |
|
WARNING ABOUT TWO COMMONLY USED OILS |
|
Mineral Oil should never
be used. This is a byproduct of the
petroleum industry, and it is made up of
very large molecules that sit on the surface
of the skin and prevent the penetration of
essential oils. Its like saran wrap. Its
suffocating to the skin as well. Another,
Coconut Oil should be avoided. It too has
large molecules that interfere with the
absorption of essential oils. |
| HOW DO
YOU STORE PLANT BASED OILS |
|
To keep them fresh,
always refrigerate them until you are ready
to use them. This is especially important
for the oils of avocado, almond, flaxseed,
borage, rose hip seed and evening primrose.
If you are mixing oils, make sure you do it
at one time and then use them quickly. If
you want to extend the life of your base
oil, you can also add essential oils, as
they act as mild antioxidants. |
| WHAT
DO I HAVE IN MY KITCHEN THAT I COULD USE AS
AN EMOLLIENT FOR DRY SKIN |
|
Right away I can think of
Olive oil. Its great for both skin and hair.
For those torn up feet, just take a bit and
rub it into the soles. It soothes, heals and
lubricates the skin. Its very strong to
smell, and if you were to blend it with
other essential oils, think of the ones you
cook with: basil, rosemary, thyme. But tea
tree is also another you could add to it for
those cuts, scrapes and blemishes. This oil
can also be added to other bases, and can be
found in the formula of many of our
products. Olive Squalene is taken from it
and that is often recommended by
dermatologists. Human sebum is 25 percent
squalene. |

Skin Oil Recipes
We
have usually spread these recipes out within the pages of
our site, but we feel it may be better to offer them all
under one page. These recipes are for using Skin Oils
in bath, body and beauty techniques.
BEAUTIFUL
FEMININE BATH OIL RECIPE FROM LIVING NATURE
Into a 100ml dark glass bottle, mix 50ml almond base oil,
5ml wheatgerm base oil, 20ml avocado base oil, 25ml pecan
oil. To this blend, add the following essential oils: 20
drops of ylang ylang, 10 drops lavender, 5 drops
frankincense, 5 drops geranium and 3 drops vetiver. Gently
mix. To each warm bath, add 10ml of this blend, together
with 10ml full cream milk (to help the oils infuse through
the water and further benefit your skin and body), relax in
the bath for 10 minutes before retiring to bed. Wonderful!
CALMING,
UPLIFTING, JOYOUS BLEND
Into 20ml vegetable base carrier oil, mix the following
essential oils: 3 drops of ylang ylang, 2 drops geranium and
3 drops orange or bergamot. This blend can either be
massaged onto the skin, or used without the carrier base in
a diffuser. (Note: if using bergamot essential oil, do not
go into the sun after application).
EXOTIC BLEND
Into 20ml vegetable base carrier oil, mix the following
essential oils: 3 drops ylang ylang, 2 drops rose, 1 drop
patchouli, 1 drop vetiver and 1 drop geranium. Massage onto
entire body.
BODY OIL
RECIPE
This combination is ideal for skin that has been exposed to
too much sun or for extra dry areas, such as heels and
elbows. Ingredients: 1 cup (237 ml) sweet almond oil, 1/2
cup (118 ml) jojoba or hazelnut oil (or combination of the
two), 2 tablespoons (30 ml) apricot kernel oil (which we
have), Essential oil (optional). Combine the oils in a
sealed bottle and gently turn it several times to mix. Apply
as needed.
TIP FOR USING
BASE OILS
Before taking a shower, brush your skin gently. This
exfoliating will stimulate blood circulation and aid in skin
absorption. For best absorption, apply the body oil while
your skin is still moist.
HELPFUL TIPS
ON SOME PLANTS
Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale)
Dandelion is a blood purifier and it can be taken internally
to help clear eruptions, sometimes eczema. A wine glassful
of the decoction is taken twice a day. Externally, it is
used along with horseradish root as an effective tonic wash
or lotion to clear skin blemishes. The milky juice of the
root and stems is said to remove worts. Roots are lefted in
late summer, cleaned, then simmered in water for 20 minutes.
Horsradish (Lilium candidum)
According to the book, "World of Herbs", you can slice a
root of horseradish, boil it in milk and apply it as a
lotion to help clear spots and pimples. Lift roots in the
autumn as the plant dies back, chop and decoct in milk or
put through a juice extractor.
Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanoides) A unique plant that has been
noted to help with acne. Vetiver treats acne, wounds and dry
skin.
Thyme (Thymus vulgaris). The compound thymol is still in
gargles such as Listerine, and in vapor rubs. The Linalol
Type, which is what we carry, is noted as a nontoxic
antiseptic useful in the treatment of candida, acne,
psoriasis and other problems. Linalol is nonirritating, so
it is gentle enough for children and skin care. Combine it
with a plant oil such as jojoba for a skin treatment from
home.
WHAT RECIPE
WOULD WORK FOR DRY SKIN IF I WANT TO USE A HYDROSOL?
According to the author of "The Healing Power of
Aromatherapy," you could blend rose hydrosol with jojoba,
adding the essential oils of chamomile, rose, frankincense,
geranium, and myrrh. Blend together and add honey. This
could be an effective mask for dry and mature skin. If you
want to add to it, you could put additional plant base oils
of evening primrose and borage, but sparingly
WHAT TYPE OF
ROSEWATER TONIC DO YOU HAVE?
This recipe comes from the author of "World of Herbs": Mix 2
parts rosewater with 1 part witch hazel and a few drops of
vegetable glycerine for its softening properties. Make in
small quantities so it does not go off. The author of "The
Healing Art" suggests adding to this recipe. They suggest
combining 1/4 cup aloe-vera juice, 1/4 cup rose hydrosol,
1/4 tsp vegetable glycerin, and 5 drops each neroli and rose
essential oil.
COULD I USE
VINEGAR ALONE AS A TONER?
Vinegars were the rage for centuries, but there are a few
things you should know about them. First, avoid white
vinegar. Its derived from petroleum. White corn vinegar is
fine and plain apple cider, wine or other vinegars are fine.
All toners made with vinegar must be diluted in water, aloe
or hydrosol. Use a maximum of one tablespoon vinegar per
one-half cup water, or less vinegar for sensitive skin.
Vinegar softens skin, restored the acid mantle, relieves
itching, and destroys fungus and yeast, such as candida.
HOW DO I TAKE
A NORMAL SHOWER AND INVIGORATE MYSELF?
Take a shower of energy with Peppermint and Spearmint. Or
increase concentration with lemon, Rosemary, Lemongrass,
Basil. Mix it in a sugar/salt mixture with jojoba, or
just add it to jojoba oil and soak!

| HOW DO
YOU INFUSE AN OIL |
|
To infuse an oil is to
steep herbs in vegetable oil. Its also
called macerating. The oils can be used
instead of plain carrier oils. I'd encourage
you to get the books we refer to. They give
you detailed instructions on how to do this
and also how to shop for herbs. An example
of herb-infused oils are: calendula and st.
johns wort. |
| WHY DO
OILS GO OFF |
|
All triglyceride oils go
rancid eventually, but some go rancid more
quickly than others. Also its important to
note that the more saturated an oil, the
thicker its consistency and the longer it
can be stored without refrigeration. Also,
the lower the iodine value, the better the
oil will keep. To learn more about this,
read "Bailey's Industrial Oil and Fat
Products", edited by Daniel Swern, and "Food
Oils and Their Uses," by Theodore J. Weiss,
USDA research chemist. |
| WHICH
OIL STAYS FRESHER LONGER |
|
Of all the carrier oils
mentioned above, only jojoba oil does not go
rancid. It is not a triglyceride oil,
instead, it is a wax ester. For this reason,
jojoba oil is preferred for fragrance blends
or for blends containing precious or
expensive oils such as jasmine, neroli, and
rose. You can also add a portion of jojoba
oil to any aromatherapy blend to lengthen
its life. |
